When I raise a young cockatiel, I pay close attention to how confidently it moves from formula to solid food. Cockatiel birds in New York may be going to very different homes, but the same rule applies: a youngster should be eating reliably before a new owner tries to change its routine.

Cockatiel Weaning Problems

Weaning is not a race. Many cockatiels complete the transition somewhere around 8–12 weeks, but individual birds can take longer. I watch actual food intake, weight, activity, and droppings rather than relying only on age. A baby that suddenly loses weight, becomes unusually quiet, or stops eating needs prompt attention from an avian veterinarian.

Cockatiel Refuses Pellets

Some young birds simply do not recognize pellets as food at first. I introduce them gradually, sometimes offering softened pellets alongside familiar foods. Pellets can also be placed where the bird naturally investigates food. The important part is patience—never assume a bird is eating simply because pellets are sitting in the dish.

Cockatiel Refuses Vegetables

Vegetables may take several attempts before a cockatiel shows interest. I offer small, fresh portions in different textures, such as finely chopped or lightly cooked vegetables, while keeping the diet balanced. Fresh foods should be removed before they spoil, and clean drinking water should always be available.

When choosing a young bird, I recommend asking exactly what it is currently eating and continuing that routine during the first days at home. A calm transition usually works much better than changing everything at once.
