Before choosing a cockatiel, I always tell buyers to look beyond color and ask about personality too. Cockatiel birds in Wisconsin can have noticeably different vocal habits and markings, but age and mutation can make sex difficult to judge at first.

Cockatiel Male Behavior

Males are often the more persistent singers and whistlers. You may see a male practicing sounds, responding when someone whistles, tapping objects, or showing off with an upright posture and lifted wings. That said, I never use vocal behavior alone to guarantee sex because individual personalities vary.

Cockatiel Female Behavior

Females can be quieter and more reserved, although plenty are friendly, active, and highly interactive with their owners. During hormonal periods, a hen may become interested in dark spaces, nesting areas, or shredding materials. Those behaviors don’t automatically mean she is unhealthy or difficult; they are simply things a responsible owner should understand.

Cockatiel Male Coloring

With a mature normal-grey cockatiel, the male typically develops a stronger yellow facial mask and vivid orange cheek patches after the first adult molt. Females generally retain more subdued facial coloring and may keep barring beneath the tail and wings. Young birds can look much like adult females before their mature plumage develops, and some mutations make visual sexing considerably harder.

When you’re choosing a bird, I recommend asking about age, mutation, weaning, temperament, and how the sex was determined. I would rather give a buyer an honest answer than make a promise based on one feather pattern or a bird’s personality.
