Cockatiel genetics basics

Cockatiel genetics determine traits such as feather color, pattern, and certain inherited characteristics. Some genes are sex-linked, while others are recessive. That means two birds can look completely normal while carrying a hidden gene that appears in their offspring. As a breeder, I keep detailed records of parentage and known splits rather than guessing from appearance.

Cockatiel mutation genetics

Mutations are inherited variations that change the bird’s appearance. Lutino, cinnamon, pearl, pied, and whiteface are among the commonly recognized mutations. Some combinations can produce striking results, but responsible pairing means understanding both parents’ genetics before breeding them.

Cockatiel color genetics

Color genetics is where breeding gets especially interesting. Cinnamon changes the usual dark pigmentation toward warmer brown tones, while lutino removes much of the darker melanin and produces yellow-to-white plumage. Whiteface removes the yellow and orange coloration, and combinations of mutations can create distinctive birds.
