When someone is choosing a young cockatiel, I always recommend looking past the color alone. Cockatiel birds in Texas may carry several inherited mutations, and understanding those traits can help a buyer ask better questions about a bird’s parents, appearance, and genetic background.

Cockatiel Lutino Genetics

Lutino is a sex-linked recessive mutation that greatly reduces melanin, giving the bird its familiar yellow-to-white appearance with red eyes. In my breeding records, I pay close attention to the parents because a bird’s visible color does not tell the whole genetic story. Some lutinos can also have sparse feathering, so I look at overall feather quality and condition rather than selecting solely for bright color.

Cockatiel Pearl Genetics

Pearl, also called opaline, is another sex-linked recessive mutation. Young pearl cockatiels often show attractive scalloped or spotted feather patterns. A particularly important point for buyers is that many male pearls lose much of their visible pearling after maturity, while females commonly retain their pattern.

Cockatiel Cinnamon Genetics

Cinnamon is sex-linked recessive and changes the usual dark pigmentation into softer brown tones. I find cinnamon particularly interesting when evaluating young birds because its appearance can become more distinctive when combined with other mutations. However, I never promise a future color based simply on appearance; documented parentage gives a much better picture of what genetics a chick may carry.
