Cockatiel Whiteface Genetics

Whiteface removes the yellow and orange pigmentation normally seen on a cockatiel’s face. It is a recessive mutation, so a bird can carry the gene without visibly showing whiteface. When planning a breeding, I look at the genetics of both parents rather than judging the offspring’s appearance alone. This is important when a buyer wants a predictable color outcome.

Cockatiel Albino Genetics

One point I always clarify is that “albino cockatiel” is commonly used by sellers for an all-white bird, but genetically it is generally a combination involving whiteface and lutino rather than a true albino mutation. These birds can have white feathers and red-looking eyes, which explains the confusion. I prefer to describe the underlying mutations honestly instead of using a fashionable label simply to make a bird sound rarer.

Cockatiel Pearl Pied Genetics

Pearl and pied can be combined, producing attractive birds with pearled feather patterns alongside irregular areas of pigmentation. Pearl is sex-linked, while pied is recessive, so breeding outcomes depend on the genetic background of both parents. Young pearl males may also lose much of their visible pearling after maturity.

When you are ready to buy, ask about the bird’s age, weaning status, diet, parent genetics, health history, and current temperament. I would rather see a buyer choose the right bird slowly than rush into a purchase based only on appearance.
