Cockatiel birds in Washington
When buyers ask me about sex, I always explain that guessing from appearance alone can be risky, especially with younger birds and certain color mutations. Cockatiel birds in Washington should be sold with clear information about age, sex, and what is actually known about the bird’s background.
Cockatiel DNA Sexing
For buyers who want certainty, DNA sexing is the option I recommend most often. A suitable feather or blood sample can be submitted for laboratory testing, giving a much stronger answer than relying on behavior or appearance. This is particularly useful with mutations where males and females can look very similar.
Cockatiel Gender Testing
I prefer to separate confirmed information from simple breeder observations. Adult normal-grey cockatiels can develop visible differences after their juvenile molt, but those clues are not dependable for every mutation. DNA testing is especially helpful when a buyer is selecting a bird for breeding or specifically wants a confirmed male or female.
Cockatiel Male Identification
With an adult normal-grey bird, a male commonly develops a brighter yellow facial mask and stronger orange cheek patches, while females generally retain more subdued coloring and tail or wing barring. Males also tend to whistle, sing, mimic sounds, and display their wings more frequently. Still, personality varies from bird to bird, so I never use behavior alone as proof of sex.
When you contact me about a cockatiel, I encourage you to ask about age, weaning, mutation, temperament, and whether the sex has been DNA confirmed. That small amount of information can make choosing your new companion much easier.

Chiho, Male Cockatiel Bird
Chiho is a charming male cockatiel with a friendly, curious nature that makes him enjoyable to spend time with. He has the kind of personality that can make everyday interaction rewarding, especially when given patient handling and consistent attention. I particularly like his gentle temperament and alert, interested expression when people are nearby. With continued socialization, Chiho can make a wonderful companion for someone looking for an affectionate, interactive bird with plenty of personality.
