Cockatiel birds in Maine

A small change in a cockatiel can sometimes tell you more than its appearance. When I prepare birds for new homes, I pay close attention to weight, appetite, droppings, and breathing because birds can hide illness surprisingly well. If you are considering Cockatiel birds in Maine, these are three practical health checks I would want every owner to understand.

Cockatiel weight monitoring

Adult cockatiels commonly weigh around 80–95 grams, although individual birds naturally vary. I prefer recording a bird’s weight consistently rather than judging its condition by appearance alone. A sudden change deserves attention, particularly if it occurs alongside reduced appetite, quieter behavior, or altered droppings. During dietary changes, weight monitoring becomes especially useful because a bird that stops eating enough can decline quickly.

Cockatiel weighing scale

A small digital gram scale is one of the simplest pieces of equipment I recommend keeping at home. The important thing is consistency: weigh at approximately the same time and keep a written record so gradual changes are easier to spot. For young birds, frequent monitoring can be particularly valuable during weaning.

Cockatiel nasal discharge

A clean, dry nostril is what I like to see. Discharge, crusting, repeated sneezing, facial swelling, or breathing difficulty should not simply be dismissed as normal. Nasal discharge can accompany respiratory or sinus problems, so I would have a bird showing these signs assessed by an avian veterinarian rather than trying to diagnose it at home.

Good bird keeping is often about noticing small changes early. That habit can make a real difference to a cockatiel’s long-term care.

Roti, Female Cockatiel Bird

Roti is a sweet female cockatiel with a friendly nature and an easygoing personality. She enjoys gentle interaction and is the kind of bird that can become comfortable around familiar people with patient, consistent handling. Her curious character makes everyday interaction enjoyable, whether she is exploring her surroundings, watching what you are doing, or relaxing nearby. I recommend giving Roti a calm introduction, a comfortable cage, safe toys, and regular social time so her personality can continue to shine.
