A healthy baby cockatiel can change noticeably from one week to the next, which is why I look beyond appearance when preparing a youngster for a new home. Cockatiel birds in Ohio buyers should pay attention to the eyes, feet, sleeping habits, and overall behavior before choosing a young companion.

Baby Cockatiel Eyes

Newly hatched cockatiels have closed eyes, with the first opening usually beginning during the second week. Around days 8–10, the eyes commonly start opening as the chick becomes more responsive to its surroundings. When I check a youngster, I want the eyes to look clean and free from discharge, swelling, or obvious irritation. A bright, responsive bird is much more reassuring than simply choosing the prettiest chick.

Good foot development matters because young cockatiels need their feet for standing, climbing, gripping, and eventually perching confidently. I look at both feet and each toe for normal movement and positioning. The youngster should be able to support itself comfortably as coordination improves. Properly sized, secure perches and a suitable walking surface also help a developing bird learn balance without unnecessary strain.

Young chicks naturally spend plenty of time sleeping because growth demands considerable energy. I don’t judge a baby simply because it takes frequent naps. What matters is how the bird behaves when awake—an active youngster should become increasingly curious, responsive, and interested in its surroundings as development progresses.

When selecting a baby, I recommend asking about its age, current diet, development, and whether it is fully weaned. I would rather see a youngster leave when it is genuinely ready than rush the process for a sale.
