Are cockatiels noisy?

Cockatiels are generally quieter than many larger parrots, but they are not silent birds. Expect regular chirping, contact calls, whistles, and occasional louder calls, particularly when they want attention or something suddenly startles them. Their vocal activity can also increase around sunrise and sunset.

For apartment living, I find their moderate volume easier to manage than the powerful calls of larger parrots. Still, every bird has its own personality, so I would never promise a completely quiet cockatiel.

Why do cockatiels whistle?

Whistling is one of the most natural ways cockatiels communicate. A relaxed bird may whistle because it is content, seeking interaction, copying a familiar sound, or simply practicing its favorite tune. Male cockatiels are particularly known for developing elaborate whistles.

Do cockatiels understand words?

Cockatiels can learn to mimic words and phrases, but I recommend keeping expectations realistic. They are usually stronger whistlers than talkers, and some birds may never speak. Males are generally more likely to develop speech, although individual ability varies.

When choosing a bird, I encourage buyers to focus first on health, personality, and socialization rather than expecting a guaranteed talking pet
