A good toy should do more than fill empty space in a cage it should give a cockatiel something interesting to chew, explore, climb, or figure out. Cockatiels in Kentucky benefit from having several forms of enrichment rather than being surrounded by toys they never use.

How many toys should a cockatiel have

I don’t recommend filling the entire cage with toys. Start with around 3–5 suitable toys, leaving plenty of clear room for movement. I like rotating them periodically because a familiar toy can become boring while a previously ignored toy may suddenly become interesting.

What toys do cockatiels enjoy

Cockatiels often enjoy toys they can shred, manipulate, climb on, or investigate. Soft wood, cardboard, paper, foraging toys, swings, and appropriately sized plastic components can all provide useful enrichment. Watch your bird closely—you’ll quickly learn whether it prefers chewing, climbing, ringing bells, or searching for hidden treats.

What toys are safe for cockatiels

Safety matters more than appearance. Avoid toys with loose strands, easily swallowed pieces, or attachments that can trap toes or feet. Check every toy regularly for damage and remove anything that becomes frayed or broken. Secure hanging toys firmly so your bird cannot pull loose dangerous hardware.

When choosing a cockatiel, I also tell new owners to budget for enrichment from day one. A healthy bird needs more than food and a cage—it needs opportunities to stay curious and active.
