Cockatiels in Maryland
A good cage should give a cockatiel room to move, climb, rest, and stay occupied without becoming cluttered. When I prepare a cage, I pay particular attention to the perches and where every accessory is placed. Cockatiels in Maryland need a setup that is comfortable, practical, and easy to keep clean.
How many perches should a cockatiel have
For one cockatiel, I generally recommend around three to four well-positioned perches rather than filling the cage with them. Leave enough open space for wing movement and make sure the bird can move between perches easily. Different heights and positions also give the bird choices for resting and climbing.
What type of perches are best for cockatiels
Natural wood perches are my first choice. Branch-style perches with different diameters allow the feet to grip in different ways instead of remaining in exactly the same position. A perch around 1/2 to 1 inch in diameter can work well, depending on the bird and the shape of the branch. Rope can also be useful, provided it remains clean and is replaced immediately if it becomes frayed.
What should I put inside a cockatiel cage
Along with perches, provide separate food and water dishes, safe chewable toys, enrichment items, and a clean cage liner. Avoid overcrowding the enclosure. I always leave a clear area where the bird can stretch its wings comfortably, while positioning toys so they do not interfere with movement.

Okame, Male Cockatiel Bird
Okame is a male cockatiel with the kind of personality many new bird owners appreciate: friendly, curious, social, and interested in what is happening around him. With patient interaction, he can become comfortable stepping onto a hand and spending time with his people. Male cockatiels are also often stronger whistlers and may have a better tendency toward vocal mimicry than females.
He is best suited to an owner who can provide daily attention, gentle handling, safe toys, fresh water, and a properly equipped cage. His individual temperament should always be considered rather than assuming every male cockatiel will behave exactly the same.
