Cockatiels in New York
If you are looking for Cockatiels in New York, one of the first things I recommend is learning how to keep your bird eating a balanced diet after bringing it home. I’m Mr Parrot, and good nutrition is one of the areas I pay close attention to when raising young cockatiels.
How do I introduce pellets to a cockatiel
Don’t rush the change from seeds to pellets. Some cockatiels do not immediately recognize pellets as food. I prefer a gradual transition, offering pellets in the morning when the bird is naturally hungry while continuing a smaller amount of its familiar food. You can also crush a little pellet over moist food to help the bird become familiar with the smell and taste. The transition can take weeks, so watch that your cockatiel continues eating normally.
Do cockatiels need supplements
Usually, a healthy cockatiel eating a nutritionally complete pelleted diet does not need routine vitamin or mineral supplements. Extra supplementation should be based on the bird’s individual needs and, when appropriate, veterinary advice.
How much fresh food should a cockatiel eat
Fresh vegetables and greens are useful additions, but they should remain a smaller part of the overall diet. A practical target is roughly 20–25% of the daily diet, with vegetables such as broccoli, carrots, leafy greens, and bell peppers offered in small pieces. Remove uneaten fresh food before it spoils.
