Cockatiels in North Carolina

Bringing home a cockatiel is exciting, but I always tell new owners that choosing a lively bird is only the beginning. Good daily observation and proper veterinary care are what help keep a companion bird thriving.

What are the signs of a healthy cockatiel

A healthy cockatiel should be alert, responsive, active, and comfortable on its perches. I look for smooth, well-kept feathers, clear eyes and nostrils, steady breathing, a normal appetite, and regular droppings. A bird that interacts with its surroundings and maintains its usual weight is generally showing encouraging signs.

How do I know if my cockatiel is healthy

Don’t judge health from appearance alone. Cockatiels can conceal illness until they are quite unwell. At home, I recommend learning your bird’s normal eating, sleeping, vocalizing, activity, and droppings patterns. A sudden change in any of these deserves attention, especially reduced appetite, unusual sleepiness, weakness, weight loss, or breathing changes.

How often should a cockatiel see a veterinarian

I recommend an initial examination soon after bringing a new bird home, followed by at least yearly wellness examinations with an avian veterinarian. Some birds may benefit from more frequent visits depending on age, health, and veterinary advice.
